In 1882, American Irish Catholic priest Father Michael J McGivney founded the order of the Knights of Columbus in New Haven, Connecticut as a mutual benefit society to protect the many Irish Catholic immigrant families flooding into the United States. By 2020, the order grew to more than 2 million members globally. During the 2022 fraternal year alone its members donated $185 million and 49 million man-hours to charity.
Father McGivney devoted his life to serving those in need, working to protect those facing extreme poverty and anti-Catholic bigotry in a nation rejecting them.
The Knights of Columbus San Salvador Council #283 will be celebrating Blessed Michael McGivney's feast day with a special mass this August 16.
