Knights of Columbus San Salvador Council #283

Our Parishes

The Knights of Columbus San Salvador Council works to support the Catholic parishes, schools and lay organizations of South Philadelphia, as well as the many Catholic charities and social services within the city of Philadelphia. Saint Paul Parish & Saint Mary Magdalen de Pazzi Church

Located in the heart of Philadelphia’s Italian Market, Saint Paul Parish is now run by the Augustinian Province of Saint Thomas of Villanova under the leadership of Rev. Paul W. Galetto. Saint Paul’s hosts the South Philadelphia Procession of the Saints between its two churches at the annual Italian Market Festival every May, and is at the heart of our council’s awareness campaign for the cause for sainthood of the Philadelphia Augustinian priest, Father Bill Atkinson. It is also the location of our partner young adult ministry, The MIX.

Formed in 1852 by Bishop John Neumann to meet the spiritual needs of Philadelphia's Italian immigrant community, Saint Mary Magdalen de Pazzi church housed the first Italian national parish in the United States.

Saint Nicholas of Tolentine & Annunciation B.V.M.

In 2016, as part of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s consolidation of parish ministries, St. Rita of Cascia Parish was merged with Annunciation BVM, and St. Nicholas of Tolentine entered into a partnership with the newly formed combined parish.  In this Parish Partnership, the two churches are connected in many areas of administration and in pastoral leadership, at the same time they remain canonically and financially independent parishes.  Fr. Nick Martorano now serves as pastor of both parishes. The Augustinian friars committed to serve this sizable section of the city and all the faithful who participate at the Shrine of St. Rita of Cascia, Annunciation BVM, and St. Nicholas of Tolentine. The partnering of these neighboring South Philadelphia communities has strengthened the Catholic presence in the area and assures their continued vitality and sustainability.

Saint Nicholas of Tolentine and Annunciation BVM have been officially covered by the San Salvador Council since December 2023.

St. Augustine

St. Augustine's was the first permanent establishment of the Augustinian Order in the United States. Such notables as President George Washington, Commodore John Barry and merchant Stephen Girard contributed to the building funds of the original church on this site.

In the summer of 2024 Fr. Paul Galetto, O.S.A., of St. Paul Parish began serving as Parochial Administrator of St. Augustine’s, and invited the Knights of Columbus San Salvador Council 283 to help serve the parish community there.

Saint Augustine has been officially covered by the San Salvador Council since September 2024.
